August 23rd marks the return to school for students across the metro area, and at Longfellow Elementary it will mark the very first day at the new elementary in the Marion Independent School District. A ribbon cutting is scheduled at 8:15 a.m. to celebrate with students, staff, and contractors. Longfellow will house Pre-K through 2nd grades and replaces Emerson Elementary School which saw its last day of school this past spring. The new school includes 18 classrooms, some designed for storm shelter use, a media center, combination gymnasium and lunchroom and serving kitchen. “We are proud to rejoin the community at Longfellow Elementary School with a beautifully functional school that represents a safe environment for learning with the most modern technology necessary to learn and to operate,” said David Law, Board of Education President at Marion Independent School District. Earlier this month the school hosted an open house for the community to get a first-hand look at classrooms and learning areas. District Superintendent Chris Dyer said the outpouring from the community was inspiring. “Watching the teachers, families, students and community members visit and enjoy the splendor Longfellow reinforced that the ‘Marion Way’ is alive in a new space. All are invited to visit our campus and experience the neighborhood school that we call Longfellow."
