What started as an experiment in wine making has grown into a family business and the opening of a new tasting room and vineyard. Dan and Judy Lubben will celebrate the opening of Lubben Vineyards with a ribbon cutting on Thursday, September 12 at 4:00 p.m. Lubben Vineyards will officially open to the public the following day, September 13, at 13504 Hwy 151, Anamosa, IA. The Lubbens have begun transitioning from successful careers in accounting and fire safety to a shared passion for winemaking. Their journey began in 2014 when their son sparked an interest by encouraging Judy to try making wine from a kit. This simple start led Judy and Dan to take winemaking and vineyard management courses at Kirkwood Community College, setting the foundation for what would become Lubben Vineyards. With encouragement from their peers in the Iowa Wine Growers Association, the Lubbens have grown their venture to include 3.5 acres of vines and leading to the creation of this new countryside location. The tasting room is designed to offer an inviting and relaxed atmosphere for all visitors. With a capacity for just under 100 people, it features a wrap-around deck with panoramic views. Visitors can enjoy live music on Sundays and will be able to see the harvest in action once vines are planted. Plans are already in place for future activities, including wine education classes, winemaking workshops, and charcuterie board creation. “We want this to be a relaxing and educational experience,” said Judy. “Wine can be intimidating, we want people to feel comfortable, be surrounded by beautiful views and warm hospitality.” Visitors can also look forward to a variety of other experiences, from small private events in the unique barrel room to future plans that include a pavilion, a gazebo, and possibly even a wine club. As the Lubbens near retirement, they view this venture as an opportunity to bring people together and share their love of wine and the outdoors.
